![]() ![]() Technical - 1969 SBC block casting numbers ![]() This substitution of the industrial Saginaw block appears to have been to allow Towanda and Flint foundries to tool up and produce the new 3970010 block which is found around May – July 1969 time period.Īny more information or correction of my assumptions is appreciated. The 3956618 Saginaw block replaced the prior high performance blocks (3932386 I think) in Corvettes, Camaros, Novas, Chevelles and Impalas (302, 350, 327 cu.in.) for about a 4 or 5 month period starting in January 1969. This is consistent with the fact that the 3956618 was the industrial/commercial version of the 350 with a steel crank, the good rods, 4 bolt main, etc. It also has no VIN and had a large canister oil filter. It also has very little cylinder wear which is characteristic of farm machinery engines. I am sure I got the engine from a Massey Ferguson 510 combine and that part seems to add it. As I understand it the casting began in the last part of 1968, but I may be wrong. The first few castings had no date code but were identified with a M Code. It was cast from late 1968 to 1979 (I think). I found the 3956618 block was cast in Saginaw, Mi and machined in Towanda, NY. Well, I spent a lot of time researching this engine and found the following: ![]()
